Tax Appointment
We have an appointment with our accountant to have taxes done on Monday the 25th. Upcoming weekend away.....cheap!
I'm excited to report that my husband and I will have a nice overnight trip sans children on the 16th in honor of his birthday and Valentine's Day. I think this is the first overnight we've had away from home since before my daughter was born (she's 2) and even though we're only planning a small trip to a shopping mall a few hours away, it's still something to look forward to. Here's how we expect the expense breakdown:
Hotel
1 night at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites (AUBURN HILLS, MI) usually runs for $99-$119, but we're cashing in 15,000 of my husband's Priority Club points. The hotel stay includes a deluxe continental breakfast.
2 Lunches and 1 Dinner
We have a nice selection of gift cards to choose from. We received a few as Christmas gifts and my husband got a small cash bonus from his company and rather than just blow the cash we decided to invest in some restaurant and retail gift cards. There's an On the Border, Max & Erma's and Chili's just outside of the mall & hotel area.
Movie
My husband and I haven't seen a movie together in quite some time. The theater at the mall is an AMC theater which I have no coupons for, except for a mail-in offer for discounted ticket through the Entertainment Book we have. All of our local theaters are Celebration Cinema's. This also means the refillable popcorn bucket I invested in will not work there. Darn!
Mall Shopping
Although we don't have plans to spend money at the mall, I'm sure I can find some good deals with coupons. The mall offers a coupon booklet for out-of-town guests and AAA members (I'm currently not). Between their booklet and what I can find online and what I have in the Entertainment Book, I'm sure I'll have some good deals to report.
Babysitting Fees
None. Thanks to my mom for taking care of the kids and shoving us out of the house!
We do still have on thing to take care of. The dog. I'm hoping my husband can work something out with his brother to stop in a couple of times and let the dog out and feed/water him. Luckily we have the laziest dog in the world and I'm sure he'll consider this a lovely vacation for himself too.

I'm back at it!
I took a couple of months off and I really need to get back to blogging my finances. I think it keeps me in line and opens my eyes to what's going on with my money when I'm forced to sit at the computer at the end of the day and go through my receipts.
Here's some info on my current status...
I'm currently unemployed. I was downsized on October 30th (effective November 1st) from the insurance office where I'd worked for almost 7 years. After crying about it for a few hours, I had decided to make the best of it and enjoy some time at home with my kids. I would collect severance and continue with my insurance benefits until 1/23/08, so I figured I had plenty of time to find a job. Here I am...3 months later and still no job and now the severance has run out and I'm officially unemployed. I've applied for jobs and either don't hear anything back or get the "thanks, but not thanks". Now I'm getting nervous.
My husband works construction and is usually in charge of jobs out of town. He's currently working on a remodel of a senior living facility about 2.5 hours from here. He leaves at 5:00 on Monday morning and comes home Wednesday night and then leaves at 5:00 on Thursday morning and comes home Friday night for the weekend. He makes good money and it would be enough for our family to live on if we hadn't made so many mistakes in our past (...credit cards, refinances, expensive car payments, no savings...).

Typing out this list made me want to throw up. I actually feel nauseous. I'm not working. I was let go from my job almost a month ago and I'm collecting severance. I'm not paying a babysitter $180/week and I'm not filling up my car almost twice a week. I've never tracked my spending like this before and this a month where I know I've spent less than I usually do. The hard part is that Christmas is coming, I'm behind on my bills (obviously, you don't see many things were paid this month...yet I still seem to be spending) and it's hard to sit home all day with my kids and not think about going out, which leads to spending money.

Notes: When I got home I found 2 coupons for the Motts applejuice in my purse for $1 each. That grinds me...even when I used almost $29 worth of coupons...it's $2 more dollars I could have saved! Oh well, even at $1.52 it's still cheaper than what I would have paid for Motts anywhere else.

I got another $5.00 coupon emailed to me for my daughter's birthday - can't wait to use that one. Macy's was a big disappointment. Mom and I spent over an hour trying to find something worth buying just so that we could use our $10 off $25 coupon. Of course, I'm checking out just minutes before the coupon expires and found out that my shirts don't qualify for the coupon. I think I'll just end up taking them back.
